We Christians can learn a great deal from Asher Lev, a Jew, in My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok. He teaches us that we have power within our craft, be it art, writing, woodworking, or something else. To tell the truth through our vocation is a great responsibility that can lead to pain. Pushing past the comfort of safety can and will hurt others, and so we must be empathetic and wise in our truth-telling. Just as Asher’s Hasidic Jewish faith tradition and community moored him, when we remain steeped in our Christian tradition and maintain a strong tie to our faith and art community, we are tethered. We learn to wait upon the Lord for guidance while continually bringing ourselves, our craft, and our community before him.
In this episode, Amy Baik Lee, a member artist of the Anselm Society Arts Guild, a founding member of The Cultivating Project, and a contributing writer at The Rabbit Room, and host Kristy Lahoda discuss how spiritual practices that help us grow like Asher did in fidelity, empathy, and love enable us to do the work the Lord has given us to do. This requires us to wait patiently, submit ourselves and our work for his review, and to surrender it all to Him. In the smaller task of learning to continually surrender the work of our craft to him and wait, we learn to do so in the other aspects of our lives. We find that Jesus holds the tension of suffering and hope in perfect love, so that any suffering we experience does not have to be without hope.
