Rather than burying or cutting out the parts of us that aren't like Jesus, what if we let them speak to us? What if we learned from them to work toward freedom from them? In the HBO series Mare of Easttown, written by Brad Ingelsby, Mare Sheehan learns how to overcome her fear by facing the truth and emotions of her trauma she has buried for so long.
In this episode, author Helena Sorensen and host Kristy Lahoda discuss Mare and how the practice of welcoming prayer can help us overcome our fear as Mare learns to do. She allows what she has buried to see the light of day where she can finally face it. When we're unable to face our ugliness, we bury it within because we know it’s not the truth but rather lies we believe. We know lies aren't good or true, so we shove them down. Doing this, however, gives them permanent residence in us. Mare has to learn to become wholly integrated, able to be fully present with others in their grief as she, herself, grieves. Likewise, we also can work toward wholeness by learning to welcome the less-than-Christlike thoughts and feelings rather than burying them or cutting them out. When we do this, we know that with the Holy Spirit we can listen to what they have to teach us and begin to heal. We can't die to ourselves and become like Jesus if we're unable to acknowledge what's in us that isn't like him. Just as Mare’s counselor provides a judgment-free space by meeting her where she is and helping her see the deeper freedom available, we can learn to allow God—who created, knows, and loves us—to meet us where we are, bringing us into deeper healing by together exploring our messiness in the present moment.
