In order to see the world through another’s eyes, it isn’t enough to learn about that person; we must become like her or him, liking the things s/he likes, reading the things s/he read, modeling ourselves after that person. In the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, Wade Watts, the main character, tries to solve puzzles created by a reclusive billionaire, James Halliday. As he does this, he doesn’t just read what Halliday wrote, he reads what Halliday enjoyed reading. He watches movies that Halliday enjoyed watching. In other words, he lives his unique life in the manner of James Halliday, devoted to him. Wade models what it means to be a disciple through his pursuit of following Halliday, albeit post mortem.
As Christians, we are called to be disciples of Christ. If we followed Wade’s lead when getting to know the person of Jesus Christ, how much more would we be able to understand his teachings? How much would it change our perception of ourselves, others, and the world if we began to see the world through the eyes of Jesus? Join Meshach Kanyion, Senior Pastor at Church of the Savior United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kristy Lahoda as they continue their discussion on the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and what we can learn about how the discipline of study can help us become more Christlike.
